A four-block stretch of 23rd Street is set to receive the subname “Galileo Club Way” in honor of the Italian-American social club that opened at 23rd and Virginia streets in 1937. On Tuesday, Richmond City Council unanimously approved a request by the club to add between five to eight new street signs on 23rd between Cutting Boulevard and Ohio Avenue. Along that stretch, “Galileo Club Way” signs will be placed along with the existing 23rd Street signs.

The subnaming will not cause any changes to mailing addresses or mapping information, according to the city. The Galileo Club has agreed to pick up the costs associated with the project. It’s the oldest existing social club in Richmond, having formed in 1933. The club remained opened during World War II and was offered for use as an emergency hospital, for civil defense and for first-aid training.
