TV's 1960s sitcom "Green Acres" likely struck a chord with Eva Zaehringer, who was a fashionable San Francisco hairstylist when she fell in love with a west Sonoma County rancher back before World War II, moved into his hillside home and adjusted to life without electricity, a telephone or access to refined culture.
"I remember as a kid she was cooking on a woodstove," said one of Zaehringer's three grandchildren, Ken Rossi of Santa Rosa. Decades on the ranch well up Mount Jackson, north of Guerneville, imbued Zaehringer with a deep love of working and living on the land.
