For the past decade, the annual Italian Festival sponsored by the Colonial Italian American Organization has raised money to help local students pay for college. Some $200,000 has been raised to underwrite scholarships and and other education-related grants.
This year's event will be held this weekend, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Oct. 12-13 on the grounds of Walsingham Academy.
The weekend event is typically attended by hundreds of locals and visitors looking for a way to taste the flavor of Italy without having to leave our area. One of the hallmarks of the event is wine-tasting, with vintages offered by seven Virginia wineries. There are also several chances to purchase food from restaurants specializing in delicious Italian fare.
