Chief Joseph Rotonda, who has held the position for the last 16 years, will retire on June 30. He turns 65 the next day, July 1. Rotonda first came to Belleville in 1980 after serving as an officer in Newark for seven years.
He was promoted to chief in 2000, succeeding Ray Kimble, Belleville's current mayor.
Despite retiring from full-time law enforcement service after more than 40 years, Rotonda said he might pursue other endeavors in the future, but not immediately.
