The federal holiday of “Columbus Day” would be erased from the books in the District and replaced with “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” under a piece of legislation introduced this week by D.C. Council member Anita Bonds. Bonds said she hoped her Indigenous Peoples’ Day Amendment Act would draw attention to Native Americans rather than Christopher Columbus.
The story that celebrates Columbus’ so-called discovery of the Americas has long presented a version of history that is woefully incomplete and Eurocentric,” Bonds said. “It fails to acknowledge the brutality to which the indigenous people were subjected by European explorers.”
