On July 30, Rockaway Township resident Dominick Nicastro will be installed as the 94th president of UNICO, said to be the largest Italian American service organization in the country.
The motto of UNICO, which was founded in 1922 and now has 132 chapters nationwide, is "Service Above Self." While it celebrates Italian heritage, the non-profit organization is about charity and community. It derives its name from the Italian word for unique, because its founders believed it would be the only one of its kind to place service to the community above fraternity. In the ensuing years, UNICO became an acronym for Unity, Neighborliness, Integrity, Charity, and Opportunity.
