The Christopher Columbus statue in the capital city is coming down, the mayor confirmed. Mayor Reed Gusciora said the statue — which has long been a target of scorn — is being removed Wednesday morning. The decision comes after the mayor initially said the city planned to form a committee to determine the infamous Italian explorer’s fate after it was vandalized again last month.
Across the U.S., protesters have risen up against systemic racism and police brutality, spurred by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis, with many taking out their fury on Columbus and monuments valorizing Confederate leaders.
