Cincinnati pizza mogul Donald R. "Buddy" LaRosa can add another accolade to his 63-year career: a street named after him. City council Wednesday renamed Over-the-Rhine's West Elder Street near Findlay Market "Buddy LaRosa Way" in honor of the founder of LaRosa's Pizzeria.
"I'm proud," LaRosa said during the presentation, "but I didn't do it alone. I had a lot of help from everybody, a lot of great people that were mentors of mine, and I guess in some small way, I'm trying to be a mentor to a lot those guys. Thanks a million."LaRosa, 86, opened his first restaurant in Westwood in 1954 with only $400 in his pocket, selling pepperoni pizza pies for 95 cents each. In the next 63 years, LaRosa's pizza empire would expand to 63 regional locations.
