Reimagining Columbus has unveiled its "generational vision" for a park that includes the Christopher Columbus statue but is not centered on it. Their plan is an approximately 5-acre park designed in a spiral around a circular community gathering space where festivals and concerts could be held. The hope is the park would include access to the river and opportunities for water recreation.
To one side of the park, visitors would have the option to walk along a trail lined with panels containing art and text before reaching the statue. In Reimagining Columbus' proposal, visitors would be able to choose how to view the 22-foot statue of Christopher Columbus: either from the ground looking up at him or from higher ground where they could look the statue in the eyes. Text about Columbus’ history would surround the statue.
