"Food is lighter in Italy," said 17-year-old Flavia Accoto, an exchange student attending West Iron County High School. "We use more olive oil and not so much butter."
However, there is at least one regional delicacy that Flavia has come to appreciate since arriving in the United States last September.
"I do like pasties," she said.
Flavia is from Maglie, which is located in the province of Lecce in the Apulia region of south-east Italy. The population of Maglie was just under 15,000 as of October 2011.
