Joseph Girolamo didn't think much about it when he was drafted for service with the U.S. Army in 1942. After all, he'd been in Junior ROTC at Detroit's Northwestern High School, before leaving school after his sophomore year.
His dad had served in the Army in World War I, and both of his brothers would eventually serve in World War II, one in the Marines, the other in the Navy. So Girolamo, who was doing defense work for Ford Motor Company when the Army came calling in November 1942, simply "accepted" the fact he'd be joining the Army.
