Councilman Paul Sciria, who is better known as WKYC Channel 3's first full-time news reporter, is stepping down from his Mayfield Heights City Council post. The 86-year-old was elected in 2011 with 18 percent of the votes. He confirmed his retirement in a phone interview, but was not available for further comment.
Sciria, dubbed a "pioneer in the ethnic press," was inducted into the Cleveland Press Club's Journalism Hall of Fame in 2009. He was hired as Channel 3's first full-time news reporter in 1957, and worked at the station for 18 years before founding the monthly La Gazetta Italiana targeting Ohio's Italian-American community.
