Will Oct. 12 be Columbus Day or Indigenous Peoples' Day in Oakland County? That might depend on who you ask. The Oakland County Board of Commissioners, in an 11-10 vote Wednesday, approved a resolution making Oct. 12 Indigenous Peoples’ Day, which celebrates Native American people and their culture.
That’s the day normally reserved for honoring the Italian explorer Christopher Columbus, whose place in history has become increasingly controversial in recent years. Columbus has been accused of enslaving indigenous people in the lands he conquered and even of mass murder of natives.
