In search for a better life, Frank Damico at the age of 18 left his home in Italy. He left his mother, dad and thirteen brothers and one sister to come to America. It was a long and difficult journey on a crowded ship that took many days. Upon arrival on Ellis Island, all of the passengers were put through many tests. His ultimate dream was to come to America to become a United States citizen.
To make ends meet, he started out by selling produce on the streets with his own “cart”. And later came to Detroit, Michigan to work in the automotive factory because the pay was good. He soon found out he had other goals and left the automotive factory to open his own business out of his garage—“National Butter and Egg”. He was also very determined to better his education by attending night school; my father could not read, write, or speak English when he came to the United States. He married and had three little girls.
Growing up they realized by their father’s example, that with hard work and determination, you can achieve your goals. The three little sisters grew up and are presently over 90 years old. All three sisters married and their husbands served in WWII. They are doing well and feel fortunate to have arrived at this mile-stone. They attribute their longevity to live each day to the fullest and challenge all adversity. In the photo, left – to – right: Theresa (97), Rosemary (Rose, 94), Frances (92)
