The grease pole competition will return to the city of Springfield for the first time in more than 20 years. It used to be an Italian tradition in the south end of the city, and this event is one of a kind. In fact, Mayor Domenic Sarno has even taken part in the competition. If you’re looking for a good time, you’re encouraged to stop by.
This greasy tradition is famous in the city of Springfield and goes back years, finally reyirning to the South End. It’s set to take place this weekend for the first time in over 20 years. “People love to see it,” said Christopher DiMauro, commissioner for the Sons & Daughters of Italy. “Ten to fifteen people joined together to reach the very top of the pole. It’s 30 feet tall, 22 inches in diameter, and it’s covered in grease and lard.”
