For the first time in perhaps more than a century there will not be a Columbus Day Parade down Shrewsbury Street this weekend. However, a new committee has taken over the event and plans to resume with a bigger and better parade in 2020.
The number of people who attended and participated in the parade along a mile-long stretch of Shrewsbury Street, had been dwindling the last few years. Several people who attended the annual event last year voiced dissatisfaction with the way the parade was being handled.
