October is Italian Heritage Month, and in recognition, Springfield leaders gathered Monday to celebrate the contributions of the Italian American community.
Some members of the crowd sang along as the Italian national anthem was played, and the tricolor Italian flag was raised alongside the U.S. and Massachusetts flags during Monday afternoon's ceremony at the Christopher Columbus Statue.
Mayor Domenic Sarno and other officials, as well as representatives of the Italian Cultural Center, participated in Monday's ceremony. Sarno, who is of Italian heritage himself, told 22News that he enjoys holding celebrations that honor the city's diverse communities.
