November 4 (Wednesday) 5:30 pm. Sponsored by: John D. Calandra Italian American Institute, Queens College/CUNY - 25 West 43rd Street, 17th Floor. Contact: 212-966-3245 / danteinitalianonyc@yahoo.com The Dante in Italiano Midtown group has been reading and talking about the Commedia since January 2018. Our slow and steady descent into the Inferno moved to Zoom in March 2020 skipping the usual summer break.
Treading slowly and carefully, we act as Virgilio for each other. The John D. Calandra Italian American Institute of Queens College/CUNY continues to host the group which is dedicated to reading the entire Commedia in Italian with discussions conducted in Italiano. The group meets two Wednesdays a month from 5:30 pm to 6:30 pm November 2020 meetings will be on November 4 and November 18.
December meetings are scheduled for December 2 and December 16. The group reads the Canto aloud for the pleasure of the Italian language followed by paraphrasing/translation of the text terzina by terzina in standard Italian and freewheeling discussion of any and all issues of interest to anyone in the group. We have meetings scheduled through December 21, 2022.
This is not a scholarly academic program but is designed for lovers of Dante, Italy and the Italian language. No particular text is necessary. All the different notes and translations make the discussion more interesting. Everyone, of all ages and backgrounds is welcome. The Zoom format allows us to welcome global participation, time zone permitting. Members of the academic, cultural and publishing communities and native speakers are particularly welcome.
All of the discussions in the Dante reading/discussion group are 100% in Italian and new participants are warned that the level of preparation required is considerable. For more information, please contact danteinitalianonyc@yahoo.com
