Eugenio Scala, 85, a longtime Eltingville resident, retired union carpenter and family man who treasured his Italian heritage, died Tuesday in Staten Island University Hospital, Ocean Breeze. Born in Pozzallo, Italy, he immigrated to the United States in 1974, moving to Eltingville. Mr. Scala was a member of Local 2155, United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, and worked as a carpenter for many years.

He enjoyed cooking for his family, playing Italian card games, gardening and vacationing in Italy. Mr. Scala most loved being with his family. Surviving are his wife of 50 years, Giovanna; his sons, Luigi and Rosario; his daughter, Josephine Giurdanella; his brothers, Salvatore, Giuseppe and Giovanni; his sister, Saveria D'Angelo, and five granddaughters.
