A celebration in Bensonhurst will bring the spirit of Italy to the heart of southwest Brooklyn. The Feast of Santa Rosalia will begin August 20, stretching from 68th Street to 75th Street on 18th Avenue (aka Cristoforo Colombo Boulevard), and end on August 30.
The feast, which is the largest Italian-American feast in Brooklyn, draws its name from the patron saint of Palermo in Sicily, where it has been celebrated since 1624. "The significance of the feast is that Santa Rosalia used to perform miracles in the town of Palermo," explains Angelo Timoneri, treasurer of Figli de Santa Rosalia, a sponsor of the event. "The feast has become a symbol of Italian heritage in Brooklyn."
