A wreath laying at the foot of the Christopher Columbus statue headlined a celebration of both Columbus and Italian-American heritage Monday. Organizers say the event at the statue -- which has stood for more than 70 years -- is more than a commemoration of Italian-Americans' contributions to the community.
"It's about tradition ... not just Italians," Columbus Day Monument Committee Vice President Nick DeMartino said. "It's about people coming to the United States and becoming part of our culture." To keep that tradition alive, DeMartino said the committee expects to bring back the annual luncheon and walk of honor next year.
