Little Italy Statue of St. Joseph Alive and Well in Eastchester, NY

Mar 19, 2019 1188

Statue rescued by Fr. Sorgie, Pastor of Immaculate Conception and Assumption of Our Lady Church. The statue is one of five that were originally donated to St. Joseph's Roman Catholic Church, which was located on 53-59 Catherine Street in Lower Manhattan on or about August 12, 1924. All the statues were carved from Carrara marble and shipped over on the Vapore Conte Verde (Conte Verde Steamship).

The St. Joseph's statue is six feet in height and was carved by well-known sculptor, Luca Arrighini from Pietrasanta, Italy. The statue, which was donated by Michael Santangelo, was brought to Immaculate Conception from St. Joseph's in early January. The statue of Joseph and the Christ Child had been the centerpiece of the church because of the name of the Church and his patronage.  St. Joseph's s closed its doors forever in July 2015.

March 19 is the Feast of St. Joseph and May 1 honors St. Joseph the Worker.

Information provided by Patricia Santangelo on behalf of the Santangelo family.
