Marco Petracci: Deconstructing Time at Agora Gallery NYC

Jul 29, 2015 1049

Chelsea's Agora Gallery will feature the original work of Montignoso photographer Marco Petracci in Emerging Transformation. The exhibition opens August 25th and will run until September 12th, 2015.

The opening reception will take place Thursday, August 27th, from 6-8 PM. Any art lover who enjoys thought-provoking artworks and meeting talented and interesting artists is encouraged to attend.

About the Artist

Playing with the idea of the camera as a source of deconstruction, Marco Petracci demonstrates that the process of unearthing the artistic essence is often a matter of limitation and constraint. Petracci's characteristic photography relies on the manipulation of time and a sense of extreme contrast in order to focus the viewer's gaze on the impressionistic and curatorial aspects of his work. In this way, he allows the viewer the space in which to appreciate the composition, isolated from sense of narrative or context.

By directing his lens towards organic forms, Petracci takes his work beyond the graphic to illustrate the inherent energy that ordinarily escapes the everyday gaze. What would otherwise be quotidian images are abstracted through Petracci's striking treatment, not reduced to mere form but elevated beyond the sum of their geometries. Key to Petracci's synthesis is his education in painting and music, which heavily inform the aesthetic choices that take his photos beyond the confines of the genre. This understanding of artistic composition combined with the rhythmic and temporal aspects of music allows for a multidimensional work and a sense of zeitgeist in each photo.

About the Exhibition

Poignant Moments Trapped in Time: Emerging Transformation

There is something eerily quiet about the artworks included in the NYC exhibition Emerging Transformation. The artists have distorted familiar scenes in careful deliberation to create a distinct, almost uncanny, atmosphere. Sweeping, empty landscapes, emotional portraits, static still lifes, and nonrepresentational abstracts have pared down their elements to the essentials, presenting the world in a still, powerful way. Even energetic scenes forcefully stop time in poignant moments, causing the viewer to stop along with the action and take life slowly, reverently, and deliberately.
