Some artists use a paintbrush and oils to create their art. Franco Minervini uses a block of stone, a chisel, a mallet and a hammer to create his. Minervini, a master carver and sculptor who resides in Marlboro, has been commissioned by various agencies over the years to create stone sculptures.

He was commissioned by the National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., to craft angels, crosses and gargoyles. He carved a Sept. 11 memorial commissioned by the National Police Defense Foundation. The memorial is in Orange County, N.Y. Minervini carved a Sept. 11 memorial that can be seen at Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook in Atlantic Highlands, and he completed a Columbus memorial for the Ocean County Library that was commissioned by the Italian-American Association of Ocean County, among others.
