
Surrounded by family members and nursing home staff at Salem Hills in North Salem, Catena Cavallaro celebrated her 109th birthday on Monday. The centenarian was born in Sicily, on Oct. 8, 1907. She met her husband while living in Italy, and came to America in the 1930s. She lived in Pleasantville until her husband, Carmello, died in 1961, and then went to live with her son Ignazio and his family in Chappaqua.
After her husband passed away, she never remarried. A homemaker, Cavallaro had three children with her husband, a shoemaker. Her son Ignazio, who lives in Briarcliff Manor, is 88. He is the oldest of the three. His brother is 84 and his sister 76. Cavallaro is a grandmother of six and great-grandmother of 12, and has been a resident of Salem Hills in North Salem since 2004.
