Raphael’s Banner of the Holy Trinity, normally housed at the Municipal Art Gallery in Città di Castello, will be on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York as part of the exhibition Raphael: Sublime Poetry, curated by Carmen Bambach. The show, scheduled to run from March 23 to June 28, 2026, will offer a comprehensive look at Raphael’s work, featuring more than 200 pieces.

The Met will present Raphael’s Banner of the Holy Trinity to the public for the first time following the completion of its aesthetic restoration, carried out by Italy’s Central Institute for Restoration and funded by the museum itself as part of the loan agreement.

The processional banner—an oil painting on canvas (166 x 94 cm per side), mounted in a 17th-century frame—dates to around 1499 and is usually displayed in the “Contemplation Room” of the Municipal Art Gallery in Città di Castello. It is considered one of Raphael’s earliest attributed works, the only painting by the artist still housed in Città di Castello, and the only movable work by Raphael located in the Umbria region.

Owned by the Municipality of Città di Castello—which officially announced the loan—the banner has an estimated value of 6 million euros. It is regarded, and studied, as a work of exceptional cultural significance: both as evidence of Raphael’s formative years as a master and for its artistic quality, which already hints at characteristics of his mature style.
