The Little Italy Colonnade is nearing completion after the Rome Board of Estimate and Contract awarded a $25,000 contract to All Seasons Landscaping and Gardening Center of Lowville.
The board called a special meeting for Wednesday in order to allow the planting of 29 deciduous trees and a variety of perennials to begin.
"We tried to get this going as fast as possible, just because the seasons are changing and we don't want to miss the planting season," said Matt Andrews, senior planner.
The 800-foot-long colonnade will connect the Erie Canal to businesses on East Dominick Street and incorporate bioretention green space to soak up stormwater.
