Mid-June is that time of year when again we can all say "Hey, Anthony!" with great gusto. Be you an Anthony, Toni, Antoinette, Antonin, Toto, Antonello, Ante, Antanas or Tony — Tuesday, June 13 is your special day. So, shall we catch you a fish? No! But we can point you to bread in the name of Anthony. Alfonso's Pastry Shoppe — 1899 Victory Blvd., 718-273-8802 — sells "St. Anthony's Bread" on June 13 each year. The fennel seed-flecked bread has a twisty shape. Shop owner Anthony Campitiello hails from a long line of Anthony's from Dad down several generations.
Sunday, June 11 is a treat for those Staten Islanders and all of those named Anthony with a celebration of St. Anthony at this historic Travis Church with his namesake — St. Anthony of Padua: Mass will be celebrated in his honor at 11 a.m. at 4055 Victory Blvd. Free bread will be distributed afterward and there will be a procession in the neighborhood's streets with the statue. Refreshments will follow in the Parish Hall.
