The city's Christopher Columbus monument has been defaced with gang-related graffiti for months, and the memorial is becoming overgrown. Located in Columbus Square at the intersection of Jacob Street, King Street and Fifth Avenue, it is just a couple of blocks from City Hall.
That spray-painted tag "540L's" is believed to be tied to local gangs that may have been involved in the May 31 fatal shooting of 18-year-old Tyreek Prince on Old Sixth Avenue near Hutton Street, city police said.
