Below are some fantastic events happening this year all revolving around la bella Italia. Hope to see you all around town!

Friday, March 1 – April 28: The Unexpected Italy curated by Carmen Guerrero sponsored by University of Miami


Traveling to Italy to discover modern architecture might seem like a paradox, but for the students and faculty of the University of Miami School of Architecture it is a relevant layer of Italian history in which a dialogue with past ancient, medieval, renaissance and baroque cultures is bound to be discovered. The exhibit will focus on the documentation of this lesser known body of work through the display of photography, models, drawings and paintings produced by students of the School. In the Museum's Gallery 109.

Friday, March 8 @ 6:30pm Italy in Motion opening begins with a 6:30pm wine reception, 7:30pm Opera performance and then the Fewell Gallery doors open to the exhibit.

Saturday, March 9: Public opening of the Italian Design exhibition and Italian-themed Family Day at the Museum, including the Mercato Italiano (the Mercato continues on April 13 and May 11)

Thursday, March 14: Historic Preservation Association Italian Village event. Details: TBA

Saturday, March 23 @ 6:30pm: The American Liszt Society's South Florida Chapter, in collaboration with the Piano Departments of Florida International University's School of Music and the University of Miami Frost School of Music presents the second set from Franz Liszt's Years of Pilgrimage, including the additional set Venezia e Napoli. Conceived during Liszt's travels through Italy in the 1830's, the set presents music inspired by paintings and sculptures by Michelangelo and Raphael, and the writings of Petrarch and Dante. This concert celebrates the Italian design and architecture exhibits on view and the 2013 Year of Italian Culture. $20; $10 for Museum members and students.

Friday, March 29 @ 7pm Curator's Talk: "The Modern Rome"
Carmen Guerrero, Director of UM Rome Program and Curator of Italian Early Modernism exhibit and curator of "The Unexpected Italy," will present a Powerpoint lecture on this architectural style. Reception to follow.

Friday, April 5 – Gallery Night Live!

April 5 - June 2: When in Rome: A selection of drawings, designs and photographs by students enrolled in the University of Miami School of Architecture Rome Program curated by Carmen Guerrero sponsored by UM
This exhibit displays the work produced in the architectural drawing and design courses of the Rome curriculum. During a semester-long sojourn in Rome, undergraduate and graduate students study the city's architecture and urban spaces through a rigorous process of recording and analyzing its ancient, medieval, renaissance, baroque, modern and contemporary layers. The drawing of the city's urban fabric through a variety of mediums yields an understanding of space, form, volume, light and color that is invaluable for proposing new architecture in the city.

Wednesday, April 17 @ 6:30pm Maria Galli Stampino presents "Piazza, square, theater and movieplex: Communities of Performance" -
The presentation will give an overview of the spaces that we now consider "traditional" for performance as well as social interaction, how Italian Renaissance architects and performance practitioners went about 'building' such spaces, and how they are still with us, though in mutated forms. Maria Galli Stampino earned her doctorate degree in Italian Literature at Stanford University, where she wrote her dissertation on "Theatrical Representations and the Audience's Point of View, 1573-1628." She is an Associate Professor at University of Miami Dept. of Modern Languages and Literatures and 2012 Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs Grant Recipient.

Sunday, April 28 @4:00pm: Amernet Quartet and Alhambra Orchestra present "Italian Vistas" -
Enjoy a chamber orchestra concert featuring music of Italy through the ages in celebration of the Italian architecture and design exhibits on view and the 2013 Year of Italian Culture. Amernet Quartet and Alhambra Orchestra members perform, Dr. Donald Oglesby conducts. $30; $20 Museum members

Friday, May 10 @ 7:00pm Stephen Brooke presents "Rome and the Viewpainters: A History of the Depiction of the Eternal City"
Renowned architectural photographer Steven Brooke traces the history of the depiction of Rome from the earliest realistic printed view in 1490 to his award-winning Views of Rome published by Rizzoli. In the intervening centuries, countless painters, printmakers, and draftsmen have been inspired to record their own impressions of the Eternal City. The images convey almost every imaginable response to Rome's artistic and cultural heritage. Steven Brooke is a Fellow of the American Academy in Rome, a Fellow of the Albright Institute in Jerusalem, and the winner of the American Institute of Architects' National Honor Award in Photography. He the photographer of over three dozen books on architecture and design, nine of which he has also written. He teaches for the University of Miami School of Architecture in both their Miami and Rome programs.

Sunday, May 19 @11am Little Italy Bike Tour Andiamo! Enjoy this buon viaggio to our local Italian Village and a few other Italian points of interest in Coral Gables, like the Coral Gables Waterway and Venetian Pool, led by FIU architecture professor David Rifkind. Then return to the Museum for free admission to see Italy in Motion and When in Rome as we celebrate 2013, the Year of Italian Culture in the United States! $5 for Museum member, $5 for non-members.

Sunday, May 19 @2:00pm: "Ottorino Respighi in Voice and Piano" Lisette Jimenez (mezzo-soprano) and Robert Chumbley (piano) perform this full concert of works by Ottorino Respighi, best known for his orchestral "Roman trilogy": Fountains of Rome, Pines of Rome and Roman Festivals, and Franz Liszt. This concert celebrates the Italian architecture exhibits on view curated by Carmen Guerrero, presented by University of Miami. $30; $20 Museum members
