There is an Italian word, Victor di Suvero said, for what he has become: Vecchietto. “Little old man,” the 89-year-old explained, smiling. “I have shrunk four inches.” But he has kept the pace on the page; di Suvero’s 13th book of poems, Once Again, published in the fall, 64 years after his debut, Salt and the Heart’s Horizons, in 1952.
And di Suvero has no plan to leave it at that. He has written: “As we grow older sun/ Comes to shine in shorter/ And more precious hours/ And there is no time/ Except the time of now.” As a poet, publisher and activist for the cause of poetics, di Suvero has written an indelible stanza into the literary landscape of Northern New Mexico, friends and contemporaries say. His contributions were recognized Thursday at Brookdale Santa Fe, the midtown senior living facility, where an event was held in his honor as the center named him its poet laureate.
