Tilman J. Fertitta, a renowned American businessman, philanthropist, and sports team owner, has been nominated by U.S. President-elect Donald Trump to serve as the United States Ambassador to Italy. Fertitta is well-known for his leadership in business and his contributions to the hospitality and entertainment industries, as well as his significant philanthropic endeavors.

In response to the nomination, Fertitta expressed deep gratitude and enthusiasm, stating, “Italy is such an extraordinary country with its wonderful people, culture, and history, and its strategic importance to the United States of America. I am honored to have been considered for this position and will work tirelessly to build upon the strong relationship between our two nations.”

Born in Galveston, Texas, Fertitta built a business empire as the chairman, CEO, and sole owner of Landry’s, Inc., a Houston-based multinational corporation. Landry’s oversees a vast portfolio of over 600 properties, including high-profile restaurant brands such as Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., Morton's The Steakhouse, and The Rainforest Cafe, as well as casinos, hotels, and entertainment venues. Fertitta’s company has become a symbol of success in the hospitality sector, generating billions in annual revenue.

Tilman Fertitta’s family has Sicilian origins, specifically from the town of Cefalù. His father, Vic Fertitta, owned a seafood restaurant in Galveston, Texas, where Tilman began working at a young age, helping in the kitchen. These Sicilian roots have influenced his career in the restaurant and hospitality industry.

In addition to his business ventures, Fertitta is the owner of the Houston Rockets, a National Basketball Association (NBA) franchise he purchased in 2017 for $2.2 billion, setting a record for the most expensive NBA team purchase at the time. As the Rockets' owner, he has demonstrated a commitment to fostering excellence on and off the court, while also maintaining strong ties to the Houston community.

Fertitta’s influence extends beyond the corporate world. He is an active philanthropist, contributing generously to children’s charities, law enforcement programs, and medical initiatives. He also serves as the longest-serving chairman of the board of regents at the University of Houston System, where he has been a staunch advocate for education and student success.

President-elect Donald Trump highlighted Fertitta’s extensive experience and accomplishments, calling him “a highly accomplished businessman and philanthropist” who has created thousands of jobs and established one of the leading entertainment and real estate companies in the United States. Trump expressed confidence that Fertitta’s skills and vision would strengthen U.S.-Italy relations.

If confirmed by the U.S. Senate, Fertitta will bring a wealth of experience in international business, diplomacy, and cultural understanding to the role of U.S. Ambassador to Italy. His appointment is seen as a strategic move, given his proven ability to foster connections, negotiate complex agreements, and represent American interests on a global stage. Fertitta’s blend of business acumen, philanthropic dedication, and cultural appreciation is expected to contribute significantly to the U.S.-Italy partnership.
