88th Fiesta rooted in tradition

This year's St. Peter's Fiesta, which steps out in earnest Wednesday, is the 88th edition of Gloucester's salute to the patron saint of fishermen. The 2015 Fiesta, which really began last week with the nine-day Novena of prayer that closes Tuesday night at the Lester S. Wass American Legion Post 3 hall at 8 Washington St.,will once again include a carnival, road race and sports events such as the Greasy Pole Walk and seine boat races.


But the festival, still presented in large part by Gloucester's Italian-American and fishing communities, continues to spotlight Sunday's outdoor Mass, the colorful Procession of St. Peter through Gloucester's streets, and the Blessing of the Fleet. For it is in those traditions that this five-day festival remains rooted.
