Thanks to its thousands of kilometers of coastline, Italy offers an astounding array of beaches, ranging from rocky Riviera coves to sandy stretches of seaside. Here's a sampling of beaches both on the mainland and on satellite islands, ranging from lesser-known hideaways to jet-set pit stops that have one thing in common—dramatically beautiful settings that will make your visit an unforgettable one. Note: Many of these havens are best reached by water—walking trails to and from them can be steep or treacherous, or at least tiring under the summer sun.

1. Apulia (Puglia): Baia delle Zagara

The Baia delle Zagare on the Gargano peninsula’s southern coast is a cinematographer’s dream, with dramatic Dover-like cliffs guarding beaches fronting brilliantly colored seas. The Baia, or bay, has three areas for sun worshippers: one is accessible only by boat; two beaches can be reached by lifts from the Hotel Baia delle Zagara (lift access is for guests only), a property located on a strikingly panoramic bluff and surrounded by lush Mediterranean gardens.
