Local students will be recreating the 19th century inventions of Antonio Meucci, one of the creators of the telephone, using 21st century technology. The students, from Staten Island Technical High School, will use three-dimensional printers to reverse engineer some of the pieces used by Meucci to create his electromagnetic telephone.
It'll bring a new appreciation to a generation practically defined by their use of the telephone -- albeit a slightly more advanced model than the one Meucci conceived in 1857. The announcement of the new partnership between the school and the Garibaldi-Meucci Museum came Monday, the day of Meucci's 207th birthday. The museum's staff and friends gathered at the Rosebank home of Meucci to place a wreath on his grave and formalize the agreement with school officials.
