Strolling along East 187th Street on a recent weekday afternoon, the Rev. Jonathan Morris explained his mission as the pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church in Belmont: to act as a kind of bridge linking the neighborhood's various identities.
On the one hand, he serves a population of recently arrived immigrants, many of them from Mexico, who are struggling to build lives for themselves in this neighborhood of the Bronx. He said that week he had comforted two parishioners who had lost parents but could not travel home for the funerals because they did not have legal residency and would not be able to come back.
