Verdicchio is arguably the greatest white varietal in Italy; some will point to Greco or Fiano from Campania, while others may argue for Vermentino from Tuscany and Liguria. But there is no dispute that wines made from Verdicchio are among the most delicious, most complex and longest lived in the country.

There are two principal Verdicchio wines; Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi and Verdicchio di Matelica. The former is named for the castles of Jesi, a town in eastern Marche, not far from the Adriatic Sea, while the latter is produced in an inland zone farther west and south of Jesi.
