The Cook County Board of Commissioners has voted down a resolution re-naming Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples Day in the county. Brought before the board by the children of the Grand Portage Reservation, the resolution also encouraged institutions to reaffirm the county's commitment to its indigenous community.
In a letter to reservation leaders, following Tuesday's vote, Commissioner Garry Gamble said the vote should not be taken as disrespect for Indigenous Peoples; rather, a belief that people of different ethnicity and cultural backgrounds should support and respect each other's traditions.
