Flagstaff City Council may be ready to declare Indigenous Peoples Day to occur on the second Monday of October, the same day as Columbus Day. A resolution to do so was originally brought up in 2015 by Councilmember Eva Putzova. But rather than passing a purely symbolic resolution, Council, pushed by indigenous members of the community, voted unanimously to begin the creation of a five-year plan centered on the indigenous community.
According to Christopher Jocks, an NAU professor and member of the group Indigenous Circle of Flagstaff, among the goals of that five-year plan are conducting a study to quantify the economic contribution of native peoples to the city, developing plans for a new Native American Community and Cultural Center and for the city to hire a liaison to work with the indigenous community.
