Donning colorful masks, some 200 eighth-grade pupils who are enrolled in the Italian language program at the Manalapan Englishtown Middle School (MEMS) participated in the celebration of Carnevale on Jan. 29.
As the students entered the classroom where they study Italian, they "ooh'd" and "ahh'd" over the decorations. The desks were rearranged in groups of four and covered in traditional Carnevale colors of gold, purple and green. Atop the tables were supplies to make the masks, which are a significant hallmark of the holiday. The masks are silk and imported from Italy.
