The Frecce Tricolori (Tricolor Arrows) is the aerobatics display team of the Italian Air Force. Based at Rivolto Air Base,12 miles southwest of the northern Italian city of Udine, the Frecce Tricolori was created on March 1, 1961, to train Italian pilots in aerobatics.
Considered a national symbol of Italy, the Frecce Tricolori replaced other unofficial aerobatic teams in Italy that had been operating since the 1930s. The Tricolori refers to the three colors of the Italian flag. White represents the snow of the Italian Alps, Green the country's fertile plains, and Red the blood spilled during the Italian wars of independence.
