Google has taken a major step toward supporting the global transition to clean energy by partnering with Italian startup Energy Dome, a company known for its innovative long-duration energy storage technology that uses carbon dioxide. This collaboration aims to advance the deployment of sustainable energy systems and tackle one of the biggest challenges in renewable energy: storing power when the sun isn't shining or the wind isn't blowing.
Energy Dome has developed a unique storage system that relies on compressed CO2 to store electricity efficiently and cost-effectively. During periods of excess renewable generation, CO2 is compressed and stored under pressure. When energy is needed, the CO2 is expanded back into a gas, driving a turbine to produce electricity.
