Hammond native talks Italian roots, theater love

Mary LeVan has been on this planet as many years as there are keys on her piano, 88. Our interview took place at her home on Jackson Avenue in Hammond near the state line. I first met her at my book signing/reading earlier this month at the Center for Visual and Performing Arts in Munster.

Married?

"Twice," she said. "My first marriage ended before my child was born. He decided he didn't want to be married and left me. I tried to make it on my own. I couldn't do it. When my baby was 4 months old, I went back home and lived with my folks. They took care of my child while I went to business college.
