Inter-Parish Council releases requirements to re-open Mount Carmel

An Inter-Parish Council representing church leadership from Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Our Lady of Loreto released a statement today saying there is a chance Mount Carmel can be reopened for masses – if the preservation group can put their money where the mouth is, in effect. Shortly after its release, the IPC and Mount Carmel pastor Monsignor Stephen Pedone clarified that the plan was not officially endorsed, saying further discussions were needed.

Mount Carmel, a historic Italian-American church on Mulberry Street, was closed in May by the Catholic Diocese of Worcester due to structural problems and public safety concerns. In the wake of that decision, the Mount Carmel Preservation Society was formed by a number of community members upset at the decision who vowed to fix the church and save the parish. In the meantime, the diocese merged services with Our Lady of Loreto.
