From Pythagoras' concept of Musica Universalis to Gustav Holst's The Planets, from David Bowie's "Space Oddity" to the Beastie Boys "Intergalactic," outer space has been a perennial fascination of composers and musicians for millennia. On August 13, electronic dance music will boldly go where no-one has gone before when Italian astronaut Luca Parmitano delivers the first-ever DJ set from outer space.
This groundbreaking event is a partnership between the European Space Agency (ESA) and German clubbing innovators BigCityBeats' WORLD CLUB DOME (WCD) series. I spoke to BigCityBeats' founder and CEO, Bernd Breiter, about his path from musician to nightlife innovator, and his motivations to keep breaking boundaries.
