In a small town in the province of Como in Lombardy, specifically in Fino Mornasco, there is a group of 180 young people who have decided to deal with Space. Space in all senses, the cosmic one and the one that contains all material things, as the definitions found in physics books recite.

The same books that teach how every material object can occupy a portion of it. And it is among these concepts that perhaps Luca Rossettini, Ceo of D-Orbit, may have taken inspiration to create his startup. Of all the things in space that occupy low orbit, the space between 300 and 1,000 km, many in fact are now disused: screws, bolts, non-functioning satellites, real waste that has created yet another pollution problem, this time in Space.

This was D-Orbit's first goal, to reduce space waste by finding an efficient and environmentally friendly way for successful space travel. Today D-Orbit is a market leader in space logistics and transportation services. Although the startup encountered difficulties in its early stages, today it is a benchmark and is committed to supporting companies in maximizing business opportunities in space.

A goal the company continues to pursue, thanks to the technologies it has developed. The company was founded in 2011, even before the New Space market, as the first company to address the logistical needs of the space market. One of its technologies, ION Satellite Carrier, is a spacecraft capable of transporting satellites into orbit and releasing them individually into separate orbital slots, reducing the time from launch to operations by up to 85 % and the launch costs of an entire satellite constellation by up to 40 %.

The company's vision is to be able to develop the entire industry as a whole, not just D-Orbit. ION can also host more third-party payloads, such as innovative technologies developed by startups, experiments by research organizations, and instruments from traditional space companies that require on-orbit testing.

To further enable satellite operators to achieve more profitable and effective operations, the company has also developed in-house a proprietary cloud-based mission control software suite designed to control entire constellations of satellites. To date, D-Orbit operates with offices in Italy, Portugal, the United Kingdom and the United States.
