More than half of Italians (56%) own at least one pet: 36% have at least one dog, and 33% have at least one cat. The remaining 44% are divided between those who don’t have pets but would like to (20%) and those who have chosen not to own any pets (24%).
On average, keeping a pet costs 65 euros per month (780 euros per year), excluding healthcare and veterinary expenses. For dog and/or cat owners, the cost rises to 69 euros per month (828 euros per year). Veterinary visits, vaccinations, exams, or surgeries average 180 euros annually, increasing to 185 euros for dog and cat owners. .
