What is the favorite pasta format of Italians? Many, without even thinking about it, would most likely say spaghetti. Well, sorry to disappoint more than a few, the answer is not the correct one. In fact, a survey conducted a few weeks ago showed that the pasta most loved by Italians is fusilli. The research shows that, even in terms of choices, we are also rather habitual and not so keen on novelties.
In fact, the top 10 pasta highlighted by the study represents 60 percent of the 1.4 tons consumed annually. And if until 2021 spaghetti was firmly at the top of the preference list in the final part of 2022 something seems to have changed. In favor precisely of fusilli.
At least 300 different types of pasta (including dried and fresh) are on sale. The fusillo is a type of pasta with an elongated shape and two or more loops, made from durum wheat semolina whose name derives precisely from the spindle, the tool used for spinning by hand.
The pasta that is probably the symbol in the world of Italian cuisine, spaghetti, still settles in second place. Rounding out the special podium is the broad category of egg pasta, typical of Emilia Romagna but widespread throughout much of the country. In fourth position, on the other hand, are penne, strictly ribbed (remember the supermarket shelves full of plain penne at the height of the pandemic?) while in fifth place are gnocchi.
