In 2024, Italy recorded a 3% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions compared to the previous year. Much of the credit goes to the electricity sector, which accounts for about a quarter of total emissions and has consistently shown its ability to reduce them: since 1990, emissions from this sector have decreased by 64%.
While the electricity sector is improving, transportation remains a critical issue. Emissions from this sector continue to rise significantly and now account for 28% of the country’s total. Over 90% of these emissions come from road transport, which has seen a roughly 7% increase since 1990.
