Italy's government has allocated €1 billion for culture. Of these funds, €645 million will be used to finance thirty-three big projects that will involve 13 regions, mainly for restoration and enhancement works, while €185 million will be used for local projects to attract tourism (like religious pilgrim paths or the requalification of the Appian Way) and one last €170 million tranche has been earmarked for undefined works.
The 33 big events "are projects designed years ago, with plans that have already undergone the cost/benefit analysis," said Italian Minister of Cultural Heritage Dario Franceschini yesterday. "These projects were never implemented because of lack of resources to start or complete them."
